10 Classroom Yoga Poses That Work (Even Without a Mat)

10 yoga-oefeningen in de klas die werken (zelfs zonder matje)
Overview poster with 10 child-friendly yoga exercises for the classroom – no mat needed, focusing on calm, balance, and self-confidence.

More calm, more focus – without preparation

Monday morning, 10:15 AM. Your class just returned from playtime. Jackets half open, voices at recess-cafeteria volume, focus... lost.

You wonder: "How do I get them back into the lesson without shouting or waiting for everyone to calm down naturally?"

Because yes, you have 26 different brains in front of you. Some overstimulated, others understimulated. And you want to start with math. Or spelling. Or just breathing.

What if you could bring calm, focus, and resilience with one exercise? Without mats. Without preparation. Just, on or next to their chairs.

Welcome to the world of yoga in the classroom.

Liesbeth De Backer illustrates on her tablet.

Why I developed these exercises

Hey, I'm Liesbeth 👋 I'm an occupational therapist, yoga teacher, special education teacher, and mom of two daughters.

After 14 years in education, I saw one thing constantly recurring: children need more than just lessons. They need support. Movement. Body awareness. Tools to deal with their emotions and energy.

I saw the need for short activities that do more than just get them moving for a moment. Exercises that teach children to feel what they need – both inside and out. Yoga taught me to reconnect with myself, and I wish that for every child.

That's why I started developing yoga breaks, fully adapted to the classroom context. Without a mat, without preparation, with impact. And yes – I illustrated them myself too. Driven by my mission: to help children grow into resilient, confident individuals who dare to stand tall.

Benefits of yoga in the classroom

Yoga in the classroom is often seen as 'something calm in between'. But it's much more than that.

  • It teaches children to feel what is happening in their bodies.
  • It increases their self-confidence and resilience.
  • And it makes the transition between lessons smoother and softer.

A child who learns to feel their breathing also learns to recognize their boundaries. And that not only provides peace of mind but also leads to fewer frustrations, better concentration, and more connection in the classroom.

Would you like to feel if this is something for your class? Then start with an exercise that has an impact after just one time: the Hand Breathing.

🖐 Have your students trace their hand with their breath – finger by finger.
💨 Breathe in on the way up, breathe out on the way down.
🧠 So simple, yet so powerful for calm, focus, and self-regulation.

Yoga exercises in the classroom: discover the 10-day bundle

It started in a classroom with 17 children. Just back from playtime, full of energy. One student had an argument, another was fidgeting in his chair. I felt the tension and thought: time to breathe.

I had them do the hand breathing. First one finger, then another. And suddenly... silence. Attention. A gentle smile here and there. After that, we could start the lesson, together.

From those moments, the idea of this 10-day bundle grew.

Through my psychomotor therapy training, I learned how movement and body awareness support academic development. Think balance, laterality, coordination, concentration... Everything is connected.

Yoga is therefore not just a moment of calm – it's also a boost for learning development. By moving and feeling very consciously, children build their self-confidence and their brain connections.

Het begon in een klaslokaal met 17 kinderen. Net terug van de speeltijd, vol energie. Één leerling had ruzie gehad, een ander zat te wiebelen op zijn stoel. Ik voelde de spanning en dacht: nu even ademhalen.Regard S2 Akuntansi
