Yoga on vacation: peace & fun packed in your suitcase

Yoga op vakantie: rust & plezier ingepakt in je koffer

Why yoga on holiday is a gamechanger for you and your child

It's time. You've zipped up your suitcases, the sunscreen is in, flip-flops and cuddly toys neatly tucked away. But as soon as you get in the car towards the campsite or beach...
it begins:
“Are we there yet?”
“I don't want to eat this!”
“Can I have your tablet?”

Sound familiar? You were so looking forward to a week of peace, but after day one it sometimes feels like you're putting out more fires than at home. Your children seem to seek more stimulation, everything is different, and their emotions are on edge.

And you know what? That's completely normal. Their brains are working overtime, exploring new environments and still trying to learn how to regulate themselves. But what if, precisely on holiday, you have a wonderful opportunity to help them with that?

In this blog, I will explain:
🌱 why children get overstimulated on holiday
🌱 how movement & yoga helps with this
🌱 and 5 tips to make yoga on holiday fun and feasible

  • a short FAQ at the bottom.

Why children get overstimulated on holiday

At home, children usually have a fixed structure: school, daycare, hobbies... and that feels predictable and safe. On holiday, everything is new. New places, different smells, sounds, people... their brains are flooded.
And those brains? They are still developing. Especially the areas responsible for self-regulation and impulse control.

That's why tantrums or nervousness are more common on holiday.
Their mind cannot process all those stimuli and calm down at the same time.

What helps? Slowing down together. Connecting. Bringing your child back into contact with their body. And that can be done perfectly with... yoga.

Why movement & yoga on holiday helps so much

Movement helps children release tension and pent-up energy.
Breathing helps their nervous system switch from ‘gas pedal’ to ‘brake’.
And doing something together gives them a sense of security and positive attention.

Yoga combines these three in a playful way: movement, breathing, and connection. It helps your child better feel what's happening in their body, so they learn how to regulate their emotions more quickly.

And the best part? On holiday, you finally have time for it. No school bell, no rush... just together, in the moment.

5 tips: how to take yoga with you on holiday

1. Stand the cards upright in the sand

My favourite tip: take a stack of yoga or breathing cards to the beach.
Stick them upright in the sand, let your child choose one and imitate the pose together. Simple, fun and guaranteed enjoyment.

2. Use shells or pebbles as markers

Collect some beautiful shells, arrange them in a circle and turn over a card at each shell. This way, you create a kind of yoga game that even other children at the campsite will want to join.

3. Do short playful flows

You don't need to set aside half an hour. Choose 2 or 3 poses to do in a sequence and finish with a deep breath. Perfect as a mini-break.

4. Let your child be a 'yoga teacher'

Let your child turn over cards themselves and correct or explain to you. Guaranteed to be hilarious and bonding.

5. Don't forget the breathing

When travelling, breathing exercises can work wonders when there is tension. Sniff like a bunny, chop like a lumberjack or blow like a dragon... children love it and it calms them down immediately.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about yoga on holiday

✅ From what age can I do this with my child?
The exercises are designed for children from about 3 years old. But actually: the younger you start, the more natural it becomes. Older children and even teenagers can still participate — some poses are even fun for adults!

✅ What if my child doesn't feel like it?
Don't insist. Let it be a game, not an obligation. Often, they want to watch first and then join in. And just watching is already learning.

✅ Isn't it too busy on holiday?
Precisely on holiday, it's a gift. Just a mini-moment together — it only needs to last 5 minutes to make a difference.
