Sun Salutation for Children: Playful, Calming, and Full of Energy

Surya Namaskar – or the sun salutation – is a series of eleven yoga poses performed one after another, fluidly, to the rhythm of your breath. Think: stretching, bending, pushing, opening. It feels like a dance that awakens your body. ✨

And yes, if you've ever done yoga, you've undoubtedly moved through a variation of this flow. It's a classic. And for good reason.

Why Yoga is a Great Idea for Children Too

The sun salutation is a mini-circuit of strength, flexibility, and breath. It builds agility and endurance, but most importantly: it gets you out of your head and into your body.

For children, it does exactly what they need most:

  • Grounding.
  • Focus.
  • Self-confidence.

After a few sun salutations, you can already see it happening: their bodies relax, their eyes soften, their energy settles.
Like that time my daughter came home from school, full of frustration. Instead of talking about it, she just did three sun salutations. Then came the calm. And the story.

MONKEY SEE - MONKEY DO

The most beautiful yoga is joint yoga. Because let's be honest: children do what they see. And if you enthusiastically roll out your mat, they'll naturally want to join in.

Doing sun salutations together isn't an extra task. It's a mini-ritual of connection. A moment where you follow each other's movements, hear each other's breath, feel each other's energy.

Perhaps you do it in the morning before school. Or just before dinner, when stimuli are flowing in. Or right after screen time, to get back into the body.

Whatever it becomes: make it something regular. Children love those recognizable anchor points in their day. And secretly, so do you.

Body Awareness – The Key to Calm and Confidence

When a child learns to feel what is happening in their body, something fundamental changes.

They recognize tension. They learn to breathe. They know: "I'm upset" or "I have extra energy" or "I need to move".

And that's gold. Because whoever understands their body understands themselves. And whoever understands themselves develops self-confidence that comes from within.

This was also confirmed by Harvard Health Publishing: yoga helps children cope better with stress, increases their body awareness, and improves emotional regulation.

Like that time a child in my class heard herself say – for the first time – “I feel angry, I’m going to focus on my breath for a moment.”
BAM. Magical.

Structure as a Safe Foundation: The Power of Repetition

Children thrive on predictability. A rhythm. Not strict schedules, but small anchors that provide security. And from that security grows... self-confidence.

A daily sun salutation can be that anchor.
A fixed start to the day.
A gentle moment before bedtime.

Children then know: here I can settle.
Here I am safe.
And from that place… resilience grows.

You don't have to do the sun salutation 'perfectly'. In fact, the more playful, the better.

Let your child help invent a story. Maybe you become lions in mountain pose, dolphins in downward dog. Use songs. Rhymes. Cuddles. Anything goes.

  • Invent a story together that fits the poses.
  • Use animal names.
  • Sing or rhyme with each movement.

Like at my home: my youngest gives each pose her own name. Not 'plank pose', but 'the bridge over lava'. Not 'cobra', but 'the talking snake'.

And you know what? Not only does she remember it more easily – she makes it her own. And that's exactly the intention.

Let your child think along – then it won't be your yoga, but our playtime.

Step-by-Step: How to Perform the Sun Salutation (Child-Friendly & Accessible)

Curious what the sun salutation actually looks like in practice? Here's an overview of the 11 poses as we offer them in our Full of Yoga cards – simply adapted for children and adults. Feel how your body wants to move, and forget about that perfect Instagram pose. 😉

  1. Tadasana – Mountain Pose
Stand firm, feet grounded. Arms relaxed beside your body.
    (Hello inner peace!)
  2. Hasta Tadasana – Mountain with Hands Raised
Inhale and reach your arms towards the sun. Let your heart shine.
  3. Uttanasana – Forward Fold
Exhale, bend forward and let your head hang. Everything you want to release can sink to the ground.
  4. Ardha Uttanasana – Half Forward Fold
Straighten your back, look forward. Feel your length. Breathe in space.
  5. Phalakasana – Plank Pose
Place your hands down and step back. Strength in your core!
  6. Bhujangasana – Cobra Pose
Lower through your arms and rise up like a proud snake. Shoulders down, heart open.
  7. Adho Mukha Svanasana – Downward-Facing Dog
Hips up, back long. Press your hands firmly into the mat. Hello energy shower!
  8. Step Forward – Half Bend
Walk your feet back to your hands. Inhale and lengthen your back.
  9. Full Bend
Release everything again. Soft, safe, supported.
  10. Arms Up
Inhale, rise up with your arms towards the sky. Greet the sun one more time.
  11. Tadasana – Back to Mountain
Exhale and return to your starting pose. Feel. Rest. Ready for your day.

✨ You don't have to do this sequence perfectly. Sometimes you're on one leg, sometimes your child trips halfway. Everything is fine. It's about moving together, breathing, experiencing.

Positive vibes? Use affirmations!

Each pose is an opportunity for a small power phrase.
An affirmation. Something that helps your child grow from within.

For example, while stretching, you say:
“I am strong as a mountain.”
In downward dog: “I release what I no longer need.”
In cobra: “I am proud of myself.”

For example:

I am strong as a mountain.
I can do anything I want.
I stay true to myself.
I look around and learn.
I am powerful as a plank.
I am proud of myself.

I release what I no longer need.
I am supported.
I am safe.
I have endless strength.
I am good just as I am.

These words settle like seeds in your child's mind and heart. 💛 Powerful. Loving. Connecting. And it resonates all day long.

Time for rest: let the body feel

After movement comes... stillness.
Because those movements need to settle.

After the sun salutation, let your child lie down for a moment. With eyes closed. A cuddle on the tummy. Maybe you only hear breathing. Maybe a deep sigh.

It's a moment when the nervous system finds its calm. When all that action finds its place.
A kind of internal tidying up – and so important.
