You’ve got your Full of Yoga cards at home. Yay! 🥰
You open the box, look through the cards and then maybe this thought pops into your head:
Okay… but how exactly do we start?
Do we have to use all the cards?
How long should we stay in a pose?
Should we choose a fixed moment?
And what if my child wants to move on after three seconds?
Good news: there’s really only one important rule.
There are no rules. 😉
The cards are designed to move with your family, your energy and your day.
No perfect yoga session. No complicated planning. No child expected to sit nicely on a yoga mat for twenty minutes.
Just move, discover and have fun together.
1. Let your child choose a yoga card
One of the easiest ways to start?
Place a few cards on the table or floor and let your child choose.
Maybe they pick the funniest illustration. Or maybe they choose the exact same card every single time.
That’s completely fine.
When children get to choose, they feel involved in what happens next. And that often makes joining in much more fun.
You definitely don’t need to work neatly from card 1 to card 30.
In fact, that was never the idea.
2. Try the yoga pose together instead of explaining it
This might be my favourite tip.
Instead of saying:
“Try this pose.”
try:
“Shall we try this one together?”
Children learn so much by watching us and copying what we do.
That’s actually how Full of Yoga started.
Whenever I rolled out my yoga mat at home hoping for a quiet yoga moment, my daughters would appear.
Climbing. Jumping. Laughing.
My peaceful yoga practice? Gone. 😅
But there was something really beautiful in that.
They didn’t want me to teach them yoga.
They wanted to do yoga together.
And that is still at the heart of the cards today.
No performing.
No constantly correcting.
Just trying together.
3. How many yoga cards should you use? One is enough
Busy day?
No problem.
You really don’t need to find half an hour.
Pick one card. Try the pose together. Laugh when you wobble or fall over. Then simply carry on with your day.
Two minutes of moving together can already become a little moment of connection.
And those small moments are often much more realistic than planning a full yoga session every evening.
So:
One card? Great.
Three cards? Also great.
The whole deck because your child suddenly wants to try everything? Go for it.
4. Turn the yoga cards into a little ritual
Children often enjoy things that feel familiar.
That’s why it can be lovely to connect the cards to certain moments in your day.
For example:
- after school to release some energy
- before bedtime
- after homework
- on a rainy afternoon
- when your child has lots of energy
- during a quiet one-to-one moment
- simply because you feel like doing something silly together
You don’t need a strict routine.
It can be as simple as:
“Shall we pick one more card before bed?”
Done.
5. Use the cards when your child is calm too
This one is important.
Sometimes parents buy the cards because their child gets angry quickly, becomes overstimulated or finds it difficult to calm down.
And then it’s tempting to reach for the cards only when things have already exploded.
But in the middle of a big meltdown, your child may not be ready to learn a yoga pose or follow instructions.
So use the cards on calm moments too.
By moving together regularly, children gradually get to know their bodies better.
What does tension feel like?
What does relaxation feel like?
What does my breathing feel like?
How does my body feel when my energy starts building up?
That body awareness develops little by little.
And the better children become at noticing what is happening in their body, the easier it becomes to recognise those signals earlier.
So no, the cards aren’t a quick fix.
They’re a simple tool that can grow with your child.
6. Let favourite yoga poses come back again and again
“But my child always chooses the same card!”
Perfect. 😄
Children learn through repetition.
A favourite pose feels familiar and safe.
Maybe your child chooses the same exercise for weeks and then suddenly discovers five new favourites.
Let it happen.
The goal isn’t to use every card equally often.
The goal is simply that the cards get used.
7. Kids yoga doesn’t have to be perfect
A leg that isn’t completely straight?
You fell over?
Left and right got mixed up?
So what.
Kids yoga isn’t about perfect poses.
Let your child discover what their body can do.
Maybe you’ll even invent a completely new pose together.
Give it a name.
The Spaghetti.
The Sleeping Dinosaur.
The Upside-Down Flamingo.
That’s where the really fun part begins. 😉
Movement, imagination and play all belong together.
And while children are moving, laughing, feeling and exploring, they are learning so much more than just a yoga pose.
8. Turn your yoga cards into different games
The cards don’t always have to be used in the same way.
Try something different whenever you feel like it.
Place a few cards on the floor and let your child choose.
Pick a card without looking.
Take turns choosing a pose.
Play a mirror game and copy each other.
Use several cards to create a little yoga story.
Let your child invent a brand-new pose.
Pick one card before bedtime.
Or combine a yoga card with a breathing card for a quieter moment afterwards.
There is no single “right” way to use them.
The more the cards feel like play instead of an exercise, the more naturally children often join in.
The most important thing?
You don’t need to do anything perfectly.
You don’t need to be a yoga teacher.
And you definitely don’t need to turn this into another task on your already-full to-do list.
Pick a card.
Let your child choose.
Join in.
And see what happens.
Because Full of Yoga isn’t really about how good your child becomes at yoga.
It’s about moving.
Feeling.
Laughing.
Being together.
And those little moments in which your child begins to discover:
This is my body. This is what I feel. And I can learn to trust it.
One playful moment at a time. 💛
How do you use yoga cards with kids?
Let your child choose a card and try the pose together. There is no fixed order and you don’t need to use every card. Follow your child’s pace and interest.
How long should a child hold a yoga pose?
There is no fixed amount of time. Especially with younger children, a few seconds can be enough.
Follow your child.
Do they want to stay in the pose longer? Great.
Ready for the next card already? Also fine.
How many yoga cards should you use at a time?
That is completely up to you.
One card can be enough. Sometimes children are finished after two poses. Other times they want to explore the whole box.
What is the best time to use yoga cards?
There is no perfect moment.
After school, before bedtime, after homework, during a quiet moment or simply somewhere in between.
Choose a moment that fits naturally into your day.
What age can children start using yoga cards?
It depends on the card set and the child.
With younger children, keep it short and playful. Copying an animal, trying one pose or simply choosing a card together can already be enough.
What if my child doesn’t want to join in?
Don’t force it.
Try a card yourself and let your child watch.
Children often become curious when they see you having fun.
Maybe they won’t join today and suddenly will tomorrow.
That’s completely okay.
Can I use the cards during a tantrum or meltdown?
During an intense meltdown, a young child is often not ready to follow instructions or learn a new yoga pose.
Your presence and calm are more important in that moment.
Use the cards regularly during calmer moments instead. This gives your child opportunities to gradually recognise what tension and relaxation feel like in their body.
My child does the pose completely differently. Should I correct them?
Usually not.
Let children experiment and discover.
The goal isn’t the perfect yoga pose. It’s movement, body awareness and having fun together.
Do I need any yoga experience myself?
Absolutely not.
The cards are designed to be easy to explore together.
Look at the card, try the pose and discover what works for you.
What if my child keeps choosing the same card?
Let them!
Repetition gives children familiarity and confidence.
Favourite cards are absolutely allowed to come back a hundred times.
